Here’s the thing: we don’t believe in building furniture just for the sake of money.
You won’t find us buying up a bunch of wood just to see “what we can make out of it.” Every board, every piece of wood in our shop, has a predetermined purpose. It’s intentionally selected with a specific design - and client - in mind. We take every measure to minimize waste and make each piece of wood last, without sacrificing on quality or aesthetics.
“[...]my purpose lies in the intersection of diligence, sustainability of natural resource(s), and finding deep & meaningful ways of developing connection to people around me.”
-Christopher Dean, owner & lead designer at HandHold Studio, as featured in Knowing Oregon
Established in 2016, Handhold Studio was founded by a serial-hobbyist craving a career that fostered creativity, community, and the opportunity to make meaningful pieces for people and their spaces.
Ten years later, our mission remains the same. We care about building connections between real people while crafting beautiful & functional furniture, with real hands and real wood.
Our commitment to community extends beyond our client-collaborative process. At every opportunity, we work with fellow small businesses, creatives, and makers to bring each project to life — whether that means sourcing handcrafted hardware, bringing in local help during a build, or hiring a photographer to document the finished piece. Every design is an opportunity to strengthen the relationships that make this kind of work possible.
Finally, when the work is done (and as the studio’s queue allows), our owner, Christopher, still delivers pieces as he initially planned to - by hand.*

Changing How We Think About Furniture
Read MoreWhat follows is a conversation about how a maker learns their language over time: where inspiration actually comes from, how process shapes integrity, and why the experience of commissioning a piece can matter as much as the piece itself.
“This is the most beautiful piece of furniture in my house. I really appreciated the partnership with Christopher to settle on a balanced and unique design for my low and very long space. We went back and forth with ideas and settled on something I will love for decades to come. The wood is shimmering and gorgeous and the craftsmanship is extraordinary - my woodworking family is impressed too!”

We're inspired by nature and you.
We take notes from Mother Nature, paired with your unique preferences, needs, and space, to craft pieces that are as beautiful as they are functional.
Every decision we make reflects our commitment to designing with sustainability in mind. From hand-sourcing materials and buying only what a project needs, to joinery built for longevity and plant-based finishes that don't compromise the environment. When a piece is done, we still prioritize the lowest carbon footprint for delivery, too.
